ABC News reported that a man has been accused by police of driving his car into the middle of a crowd at the popular South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, killing two and injuring many more. (Suspected Drunk Driver Kills 2 at SXSW, March 13, 2014). According to the report, Police had blocked of a normally busy section of Austin, essentially turning part of the city into a pedestrian mall for the festival, and are saying that the driver sped through the barriers to the festival and slammed his car into a crowd of people standing outside of a nightclub.
According to the report, two people were killed and 23 were injured by what police described as an “intentional act.” According to the report, the suspect, Rashad Charjuan Owens, 21, is expected to face two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle. According to the report, three of the victims were reported as being in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon. According to the report, records show that Mr. Owens had a previous conviction in Alaska for drunken driving and one in Texas for criminal trespassing.
“Accidents of this magnitude feel unimaginable most of the time and we are taken aback of the amount of carnage one person allegedly caused with a motor vehicle,” said Adnan Munawar, Partner at Munawar & Andrews-Santillo LLP. “Drunken driving accidents seem especially unforgivable because the person who decides to drink and get behind the wheel made a choice, and that choice was to operate a deadly, metal machine without the concern for the lives of other people on the road. For someone to plow through a barricade and mow down over 20 people is beyond words. Our hearts truly go out to the victims and their friends and families.”
“In cases like these, where a driver who caused an accident was intoxicated, it is particularly important to hold the driver accountable. While it is likely no amount of deterrence will ever completely eradicate our society of alcohol-related accidents, we must all do out part to make our roads as safe as possible, and one way to do that is to file a claim in civil court. Now for some victims, filing a claim may be the last thing they want to think about, but unfortunately the law places time limits on such matters and getting started as soon as possible is often the wisest choice to make. The good news is that consulting with an attorney who is experienced in handling these types of claims is free, and you only ever pay a fee if you win, so you can get started at no cost to you and then let an expert handle the claim for you while you focus on recovering from your injuries or mourning your loss.”
