New York Nursing Home Negligence Lawyer Adnan Munawar Expresses Concern Over Long Island Nursing Home Deaths
(PRWEB) March 26, 2014 -- According to a report from NBC New York (I-Team: Families Outraged after Macabre Nursing Home Deaths, February 27, 2014) families of two Korean War veterans are accusing the same Long Island nursing home of negligently causing their deaths. According to the report, one of the men, Thomas Bischoff, had bedsores (pressure ulcers) over much of his backside, some of which had grown so large and deep that a hand could fit inside some of the holes in his skin. According to the report, Mr. Bischoff went into cardiac arrest after a septic infection attacked his respiratory system, a condition that the blood sores may have contributed to. According to the report, the second man, Raymond Curiale, who suffered from dementia, accidentally hanged himself by a strap of his wheelchair when he was left unattended. According to the report, Mr. Curiale was supposed to be monitored every fifteen minutes, though records indicate he was left alone for close to an hour when he died.
According to the report, the Suffolk Center was the site of another questionable death last May when a patient died after overdosing three times on narcotic painkillers. The report states that inspectors said the facility failed to monitor and supervise its residents who sought out drugs.
“What makes nursing home injuries and deaths particularly devastating is that the family members have entrusted the health and safety of their loved ones to the care of a facility only to have that trust breath in the most horrible of ways,” said Adnan Munawar, Partner at Munawar & Andrews-Santillo LLP. “People expect that their loved ones will be cared for and nurtured, but unfortunately, time and again nursing homes take advantage of their position and neglect their responsibilities. While it would be improper to make any conclusions about the deaths of these two gentleman, the facts as they appear now certainly suggest that something was afoul.”
“No matter what the investigation turns up for Mr. Bischoff and Mr. Curiale, their deaths should at least point to the need for New York State to install greater protections for people who are in the care of nursing facilities. While we wait on the legislators to act, the families of loved ones who have died or suffered abuse or injury due to the negligence acts of a nursing facility should not hesitate to seek justice. This is not a process you want to go through alone; you should definitely seek the advice and counsel of an experienced attorney who can make sure your claims are handled efficiently and accurately while caring for and understanding your needs as you cope with the situation. Consulting with a personal injury attorney is free, and you only ever pay a fee if you lose, so there is no reason not to find out what your rights are under the law,” said Munawar.
