We will continue to do all that we can to protect our environment and preserve the natural beauty of Muskoka and the Lake of Bays area for the enjoyment of generations to come.

Muskoka, Ontario (PRWEB) April 01, 2014

Port Cunnington Lodge & Resort (http://www.portcunnington.com), a traditional full-service Muskoka resort located on beautiful Lake of Bays, is pleased to announce that they have won a prestigious design award from the South Carolina Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (A.I.A.) Robert Mills Residential Design Awards Program for the innovative and eco-friendly design and construction of two of their newest lakefront cottages.

The Golden Eagle and Osprey cottages, located on the resort’s east bay, are stunning 5-bedroom, 5 ½-bath timber frame chalets that have been built to Platinum Level LEED standards. Both cottages command spectacular lake views and feature open-concept great rooms with soaring cathedral ceilings, stone fireplaces, full kitchens, and large screened-in Muskoka rooms overlooking Lake of Bays.

Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a rating system for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of green buildings. Recognized as the standard for measuring building sustainability, LEED offers four certificate levels for new construction; Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum. A Platinum Level designation denotes that a building has attained LEED’s highest standard for environmental responsible construction. To achieve a Platinum rating, the structure must be built using the most eco-friendly construction methods, using building materials and operating systems like solar panels, geothermal heating and cooling systems, material harvested or mined within a 100 mile radius, high-efficiency insulation and drought tolerant landscaping, to name just a few.

The jury that selected Port Cunnington Lodge & Resort’s Osprey and Golden Eagle cottages for the Robert Mills Residential Design Award is comprised of several distinguished residential architects from the Washington D.C. area. The design awards program is named in honour of Robert Mills, America’s first trained architect. A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Mills is best known for designing the iconic Washington Monument and the U.S. Treasury building, as well as numerous other significant structures in Washington and throughout South Carolina. The Robert Mills Residential Design Award is part of a long standing tradition of the South Carolina A.I.A. in acknowledging excellence in architecture and design.

“We are thrilled that Port Cunnington Lodge & Resort has been recognised with this esteemed design award,” states innkeeper Kim Loader. “We are extremely proud of the Osprey and the Golden Eagle cottages. They are two of the nicest rental cottages that you will find anywhere in Muskoka, and certainly the most eco-friendly. Port Cunnington Lodge has long been committed to the protection of the environment and has for many years worked hard to reduce our footprint by reducing energy consumption, initiating recycle programs and building sustainable rental cottages. We were the first family-operated resort in Ontario to build platinum LEED certificate cottages; the highest measured level that a building can reach under this program. We will continue to do all that we can to protect our environment and preserve the natural beauty of Muskoka and the Lake of Bays area for the enjoyment of generations to come,” says Loader.
