Tariq Drabu discusses his support for an article published by Dental Tribune where the BDA highights the benefits of adding fluoride to the public water supply
(PRWEB) April 01, 2014 -- Tariq Drabu is a well known Manchester dentist. He owns the successful Langley Dental Practice in Middleton, Manchester. In addition, he is the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and treatment Services for NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. He is also known for the interest he takes in research, scientific study, and clinic trials within dentistry. He is passionate about promoting good oral health as a way of directly helping and contributing to improving the oral health of the nation.
Tariq Drabu was speaking from Manchester recently about an article which was recently published online by the Dental Tribune website. The article, which can be read here, reports that the British Dental Association has highlighted the benefits of adding fluoride to the public water supply.
Tariq Drabu, speaking from Manchester said, “The fluoridation of drinking water continues to be a controversial subject around the world. The British Dental Association (BDA) has recently highlighted the benefits of adding fluoride to water, citing its positive effect on oral health. A number of studies have been undertaken and reports have been published supporting the theory that adding fluoride to the water supply could dramatically reduce tooth decay and save the National Health Service millions of pounds.
The article reports that the NHS could save as much as £4 million pounds on annual tooth extractions alone. As a provider of dentistry in a high needs area with high levels of decay and social deprivation I support any public health measures that will bring down levels of tooth decay. Proposed legislation indicates that the supply of fluoride will be at recommended concentrations with a maximum health benefit to the community. ”
Tariq Drabu, leading Manchester dentist, went on to say, “I have no doubt that the findings of the research in test areas like the West Midlands are correct, and the results are conclusive in terms of reduction in levels of decay. We need to look at measures that will deliver, maximum cost effectiveness and fluoride is one of those measures. We practice here in North Manchester, which is an area of high social deprivation and poor dental health. In terms of tooth decay levels, our local health trusts are in the bottom 20 out of all 300 health trusts in the whole country. Figures from the Department of Health show that areas like ours have children’s tooth decay rates that are eight times worse than the best areas in the country. Therefore we need prompt and proactive public health measures such as water fluoridation in order to improve the dental health of the population, especially children. A comparable area like South Birmingham, which is in the bottom third for social deprivation but which has fluoride in the water, is in the top third of areas with the lowest levels of tooth decay. So, when we compare like for like we can see that fluoride does work.”
Tariq Drabu, the leading Manchester dentist closed by saying, “We need a strong lead from government to get fluoridation back on the agenda. The government talks a lot about reducing health inequalities. It needs to show that it is serious. It can show that it is serious by pushing forward with a programme of water Fluoridation.”
