Random aims to help us explore both the known and the unknown, and in doing so brings back the magic of discovery that is the essence of the web.

Random, a fresh way to discover new and interesting content on the web, today launched an iOS app for anonymous and personalized web browsing. Backed by Skype co-founder, Janus Friis, Random was built to reinvigorate the way people browse the web by creating a serendipitous and aesthetically amazing experience.
“The Internet is so vast, but existing tools don’t help us explore this vastness properly,” said Janus Friis, Co-founder of Skype. “Random aims to help us explore both the known and the unknown, and in doing so brings back the magic of discovery that is the essence of the web.”
Random has been in development since 2011 and works by learning user behavior as it serves up content and analyzes what’s selected and how people spend their time. Content is virtually unlimited – everything on the web is fair game, from long-form written content to videos and memes, and is intentionally focused on introducing random discoveries rather than purely timely or “newsworthy” content.
Random is purpose-built to never deliver the same thing twice – once a link is closed, it’s gone forever on purpose. Random believes content discovery should be anonymous, so there is no login process or personal verification, and no preconceived ideas tied to user identity and preferences. Rather, the experience is based on the journey that begins by using the app, and evolves in unexpected ways as Random learns a user’s interests and where they go.
“Discovering content online has become a stale experience that’s primarily driven by typing and clicking and trying to keep up with our social feeds. We’re being led down the same path to similar content repeatedly,” said Marko Anderson, co-founder of Random. “We created Random to inspire people to be curious and to embrace serendipity. We think people want to explore the Internet more independently, but doing that is a much different experience now than when browsers were first invented. There are so many buried treasures on the web, and we want to help people uncover new things and give them ‘relevant surprises’ in the content we surface.”
Random is available in the Apple iTunes App Store here.
Random is an anonymous portal for finding unexpected content based on users’ personal interests and powered by their behavior. Designed for the curious, Random has been streamlined to remove the complexity of exploring your interests, allowing for a more serendipitous adventure. Spending years refining their algorithm, Random intimately learns users' interests based entirely off behavior instead of social information and is programmed to never deliver the same thing twice. Based in Helsinki, Finland, Random is a team of data scientists, mathematicians, designers and academics and is backed by a fund founded by Janus Friis, Skype co-founder.
