Trethaway explains how a furnace is only as effective as its ductwork and how leaks in the ducts negate a system's efficiency rating, causes uneven air distribution and allows dust and pollutants to enter living spaces.

Aeroseal, one of Priority Energy’s cutting-edge energy efficiency services, was recently featured on Ask This Old House (ATOH), the nationally syndicated PBS home improvement show. The March 20th episode was led by the series’ plumbing and heating expert, Richard Tretheway, who solves a homeowner's complaint about high energy bills even after installing a new high efficiency furnace by sealing his ductwork with the award-winning system.
In the ATOH episode Tretheway explains how a furnace is only as effective as its ductwork and how leaks in the ducts negate a system's efficiency rating, causes uneven air distribution and allows dust and pollutants to enter living spaces. All of which impact a home's comfort.
ATOH recommends sealing the leaks and demonstrates the latest sealing technology; Aeroseal. The patented system sprays sealant into the ducts and is able to seal areas that would normally not have been reachable. Controlled by a custom-designed computer, the before and after. In this case they started at 307 c.f.m. or 58 sq. inches of air leakage. After the ducts were sealed, there was only 19 c.f.m. or 4 sq. inches of leakage; a 94% reduction.
It is estimated that 85% of all U. S. homes, both old and new, have significant duct leakage. This means that most of the country is wasting money and energy. The Department of Energy has said that sealing duct leaks is one of the most beneficial energy efficiency improvements a homeowner can make.
