Students and Teachers Have a ‘Field Day’ with Project Based Learning App

The new Field Day mobile app lets students and teachers learn on the go in a fun, active way supported by educational technology.

Released in the iTunes App Store today, Field Day helps students use technology for research, critical thinking, and collaboration with personalized Project Based Learning (PBL) activities. Using a mobile app to manage projects and collect data gets students out into the real world while working on a project rather than being tied to a desktop computer. The name, Field Day, represents this freedom to explore while learning.

PBL is a teaching method involving students with lifelong learning skills including problem solving and decision-making. Students work on real-world problems, with the goal of creating a product or presentation to share what they learn.

Field Day lets students personalize their projects with a Creative Commons image search or by taking their own photos to identify each project. The app also helps students learn to develop questions and strategies to answer real-world challenges, assisted by starter text based on Bloom's taxonomy. Within each challenge, students can use the app’s tools to collect data including recording video, taking photos, making notes, counting, and drawing. After collecting their information, students can see a summary of everything they have asked and discovered to build their final presentation.
