Field and Floor FX Supports Red Land High School’s Pursuit of Excellence at WGI Color Guard World Championships
(PRWEB) March 30, 2014 -- When the Red Land High School Performance Company in Lewisberry, Pa., competes in the Winter Guard International (WGI) Color Guard World Championships April 3-5, the experience for this top-ranked Pennsylvania color guard unit will not only be an unforgettable moment for the team itself but also one for Red Land senior and color guard member Shelby Boyer. The 18-year-old, who has been battling non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, had her dream to take her school’s color guard team to the championships in Dayton, Ohio, granted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This wish grant complements Red Land’s first place win at the Winter Guard International Eastern Championships March 22-23 in Monmouth, N.J.
Carol Bieler, Red Land’s color guard director, said that Shelby has been involved with color guard since eighth grade. Upon being diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma at age 16, she was forced to miss several seasons due to treatments.
Shelby, who is now in recovery, had been contacted several times from representatives of the Make-A-Wish Foundation regarding her wish, but she had declined them, stating there were other children who had greater needs. In March 2013, Shelby decided to pursue Make-A-Wish’s invitation by asking the organization to grant the 14 members of Red Land’s color guard team free travel to the WGI Color Guard World Championships. Make-A-Wish accepted.
“She’s always been very positive, even from day one of her diagnosis,” Bieler said. “Shelby is always thinking of the greater good in everything she does and everyone she meets. She is an inspiration to her entire guard family.”
Bieler also acknowledges an in-kind donation of the digital flags used by Red Land in their “I’m More Than That” performance this year. “The flags that were donated from Field and Floor FX help tell the story of our show, and we have had many positive comments throughout the season on how beautiful they are,” she said.
“We at Field and Floor FX are proud of Carol’s accomplishments with the Red Land High School Performance Company this season,” said Doug Gardner, director of Field and Floor FX. “Inspired by Shelby Boyer’s selfless wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, we were pleased to be a part of Red Land’s dynamic season through the donation of our specially designed digital flags. All of us wish Carol and her team much success at this weekend’s championships.”
The 2014 WGI Color Guard World Championships will be held Thursday, April 3-Saturday, April 5 at the University of Dayton.
About the Make-A-Wish Foundation
Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. According to a 2011 U.S. study of wish impact, most health professionals surveyed believe a wish-come-true can have positive impacts on the health of children. Kids say wishes give them renewed strength to fight their illnesses, and their parents say these experiences help strengthen the entire family. Based in Phoenix, Make-A-Wish is one of the world’s leading children’s charities, serving children in every community in the United States and its territories. With the help of generous donor and more than 25,000 volunteers, Make-A-Wish grants a wish somewhere in the country every 38 minutes. It has granted more than 226,000 wishes since its inception in 1980, nearly 14,000 in 2012 alone. Visit Make-A-Wish at wish.org to learn more.
