9th Street Italian Market Festival May 17th & 18th , 2014 Taking Place in the Heart of South Philly- Come Celebrate with the S. 9th Street Business Association
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) April 01, 2014 -- Everyone’s Italian during the South 9th Street Italian Market Festival (http://www.italianmarketfestival.com), the city’s biggest block party that runs along South 9th Street, from Fitzwater to Federal Streets. The nation’s oldest outdoor continuous market will host this highly-anticipated annual event on Saturday May 17th and Sunday May 18th from 11am to 6pm, rain or shine.
Festival Highlights:
New this Year – Introducing the first ever photo essay book published by the S. 9th Street Business Association. The book is a compilation of pictures of the Market through Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Dave Lakotas, the photographer will be signing books which can be found at the Visitor Center at 919 S. 9th Street.
Also new this year Saint Mary Magdalen dePazzi Church located at 712 Montrose Street will be open for historic tours. This church and parish is the first Italian Catholic Parish in the United States. The Church is a Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission Landmark. A unique feature inside the church, there are two balconies, which is rather remarkable. Founded by Saint John Neuman in 1852 the church was completed in 1891.
Two new businesses will be taking part in their first Festival. Cardenas Oil and Vinegar Tap Room and Torero Tapas Bar are located right next to each other 940 and 942 S. 9th Street. The Tap Room will be featuring oils and vinegars from all over the world, Torero will present a variety of Spanish flair tapas plates and paella.
A one and only time happening, DiBruno Brothers will be celebrating in DiBruno Brothers style its 75th Anniversary on the Piazza at 9th & Montrose Street. Featuring a throw back interactive area with food and games.
Live Entertainment – Four stages of music to suit all tastes and get everyone partying in the streets. The Festival Main Stage (9th & Washington Avenue) features The Red Alert Band, Modern Bliss and Musician Impossible; the 9th & Christian Street stage stars DJ Johnny Looch spinnin’ 9th Street dance and party favorites, DJ Joe Broscoe hosts the Federal Street stage and will be playing whatever he feels like throughout the course of the two day Festival. This year, we are introducing a stage a 9th & Ellsworth which will feature local music talent. The Washington Ave. Stage presented by Sugar House will be MC’ed by South Philly favorite Mark Cassasanto, feature writer “On The Corner” from Row Home Magazine.
John Marzano Half Ball Tournament will take place in the Christopher Columbus Charter School at 916 Christian Street. Registration fee is $125.00 per team. Maximum team size is 5 players. Proceeds benefit the John Marzano Education Fund. Teams can register at the Italian Market Visitor Center at 919 S. 9th Street.
Procession of Saints – Held Sunday, May 18th at 11 am, this annual tradition, the St. Paul Parish Procession of Saints starts at Saint Mary Magdalen Church (712 Montrose Street) and pauses for the Blessing of the Market at 9th and Washington Avenue, ending at Saint Paul Catholic Church (corner of S. Hutchinson and Christian Streets).
And of course, the star of the Festival is FOOD, FOOD and more FOOD.
