Mastering Materiality - Sustainability Experts Convene in San Francisco to Discuss Cutting-edge Examples of Materiality
(PRWEB) April 01, 2014 -- As stakeholders increasingly request more information and transparency on environmental, social and governance issues, companies are strengthening their non-financial reporting processes by leveraging materiality analyses in an effort to disclose only the most material, or relevant, issues to their business and stakeholders.
Additionally, several leading reporting standards (SASB, GRI, IIRC) have come out with frameworks that provide a platform for sustainability reporting and how to leverage the strategic benefits of materiality.
Companies are faced with the challenge of understanding these different guidelines and determining how best to apply them.
“Materiality is about effective allocation of resources, focusing an organization on the most relevant and significant issues it can influence and control. Done well, materiality outputs add value to business strategy, as well as helping focus sustainability reporting” said Dave Knight, Director of DNV GL Sustainability Advisory Services.
Bringing together practitioners in the field, AGRION and DNV GL aim to demystify materiality and highlight how this assessment can enhance the credibility and effectiveness of sustainability reporting and support companies in aligning resources and attention to those issues that matter the most.
Experts previously met through AGRION on January 21st to discuss sustainability reporting and how best to utilize reports to inform decision-making and strategy. “Sustainability is a risk management framework through which we can deliver better value to our clients”, said Claire Bonham-Carter, Director of Sustainable Development at AECOM.
On April 22, 2014 panelists will take a deeper look at materiality and how to gain value from the process. Caesar’s Entertainment Corporation is the first company to have obtained the GRI G4 Materiality Matters. Check for their corporate social responsibility report. They will share best practices, the challenges and opportunities of G4 reporting, and how they’ve benefited from their materiality process. Other speakers at the event include SASB and Flextronics.
