Experient Health Takes On Children's Health And Sports Safety In Latest Blog Post

Each year, more than three million children under 14 are injured playing sports. Safety tips and knowing what to do if there is an injury can help.

Each year, more than three million children under 14 are injured playing sports, Experient Health reported on its web site as part of its Living Well Blog series this month.

"It is estimated that as many as 20 percent of children participating in sports are injured each year," Experient Health wrote. "Young athletes are at an increased risk for injury because their bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments are still growing."

But that doesn't mean children shouldn't take to the field or court. It means parents, guardians and coaches need to act and think safely and also know what to do if a child is injured.

It its "Preventing Children's Injuries" Blog post, Experient Health, the health insurance arm of the Virginia Farm Bureau, provides those tips and suggestions.

Safety tips include knowing and following the rules of the sport, ensuring the child is in good physical condition before beginning any sport, wearing proper apparel, knowing how to use athletic equipment, warming up, and more.

If injury occurs, Experient Health wrote, "prompt treatment can often prevent a minor injury from turning into something much worse."

To prevent injuries, Experient Health suggests parents and guardians enroll children in programs that have adult supervision.

"Teach your child to start by warming up and stretching. Remind your child to cool down afterwards."
