Sorority sisters experience third annual leadership excursion in Costa Rica.

Everything, such as the members who participated, the activities, the cultural richness inherent in such a beautiful country and the opportunity to reconnect to Tri Delta in such a unique and special manner has left me speechless and deeply humbled.

Seventeen Delta Delta Delta Fraternity members traveled to Costa Rica March 8-15 to experience Evergreen®, a journey in leadership, sponsored by the Fraternity. Evergreen is a values-based, alternative spring break program that combines the allure of travel with self-examination and personal development. Participants discover the social, historical and geographic contours of Costa Rica while exploring the landscapes of their own hearts and minds.

This year’s program was led by Michael Greenberg, owner of Journey 360®. Two participants from last year’s trip, Megan Dennehy, Chapman, and Aubrey James, Richmond, attended this year as program interns and assisted with program facilitation. Also attending the trip as volunteer facilitators were Taylor Dudley, Cal State/Long Beach, and Christie Yerks, Virginia Tech.

Evergreen 2014 intern Aubrey James reflects on her experience: “Evergreen has impacted me in many different ways. From creating a leadership development plan to learning to work in teams, I have developed important skills that I have applied both to my officer position in Tri Delta as well as other leadership roles.”

Participants were selected in November after an application process that involved essays and questions about their leadership experiences. The 17 women selected represent Tri Delta chapters from across the country.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Tri Delta’s national philanthropic partner, provided one Evergreen scholarship to an applicant who showed specific interest and leadership experience in philanthropy. Chelsea Miley, Florida Gulf Coast, was the first scholarship recipient. “When I heard I had received the St. Jude Evergreen scholarship I felt extremely blessed and compelled to make the absolute most out of the opportunity,” says Chelsea. “For me, my Evergreen experience means taking what I learned through the curriculum and incorporating that with what I observed through the Costa Rican culture.”

When asked what she loved most about the trip, Tri Delta alumna and Evergreen facilitator Taylor Dudley, Cal State/Long Beach, says, “Everything, such as the members who participated, the activities, the cultural richness inherent in such a beautiful country and the opportunity to reconnect to Tri Delta in such a unique and special manner has left me speechless and deeply humbled. My heartfelt thanks to each of you, Tri Delta and The Center for an experience that I will not forget and will never stop giving thanks for.”

In addition to their leadership training, members also had unique opportunities for adventure, including zip-lining through the rainforest and white water rafting. Tri Delta was especially excited to return to a school in Sona Fluca and where Evergreen participants had the opportunity to meet students and teachers and learn more about Costa Rican culture. In honor of Tri Delta, Journey 360 and Affinity Consultants gave a monetary gift to the Sona Fluca school.
