New York Toy Fair Proves to Toy Vey That There is Place in the Market for Maccabee on the Mantel

With the tabernacle of Toy Fair behind them, the makers of the Maccabee on the Mantel have discovered that the miracle of Hanukkah can last all year long.

“We anticipated that Maccabee on the Mantel would be a success as we had sold out with very little marketing in Hanukkah ’13. We tempered our expectations, however, based on the fact that with a February event like Toy Fair, the holidays seem to be in the rearview mirror,” said David Wilk one of the Maccabee creators. Tempered expectations aside, their first foray into Toy Fair proved to be quite the event for the Maccabee team.

Book author and co-creater Abra Liberman Garrett said of the event, “It was a learning opportunity for all of us. We knew people would be excited about the Maccabee; having young, Jewish children we were our own test market for that. What we had not anticipated was the excitement regarding future product possibilities. We had people making requests such as, ‘Can you please create a costume of the Maccabee for children to wear at Purim?’ or ‘How about another book for Passover…say Moses on the Mantel?’ These were all valid requests and as a former Temple preschool teacher I should not have been surprised, this is a market that has been vastly underserved for some time and people are ready to have more Jewish and holiday specific toys for their children. I believe that is why the whole time we were at Toy Fair our booth was just packed. Well, packed on account of our great product…and packed because we had a couch in our booth, people are reeeeally ready to sit after hours of walking around The Javits Center.”

So what is next for the Toy Vey Team? The group has multiple additional projects they are excited to explore and requests, suggestions, and ideas continue to come in on a regular basis. While subsequent holiday books and plushes are certainly the most obvious, the creative group is also excited to branch out into other areas as well. In the interim, The Maccabee on the Mantel remains their first priority. “This project is from the heart, motivated as a ‘feel good’ and fun way for children to celebrate their heritage and their future simultaneously,” said Frank Ford, the third creator of the Maccabee on the Mantel and fellow member of the Toy Vey team. The excitement the team has is infectious and while most parents are gearing up for summer vacation the Toy Vey team is all in a holiday head space, preparing to make this upcoming Hanukkah the best one yet.
