World Autism Awareness Day means many things to many people. What it means to New Jersey's Fluitec is an opportunity to share the company's support of Autism Awareness and their understanding of oxidative stress and monitoring of antioxidants to consumers, especially parents of Autistic children. The company, an active supporter of Autism Speaks and a world leader in data collection, analysis, and mitigation of these stresses, developed the TesTME Kit, with issues like Autism in mind.
"There is a direct correlation between the amount of free radicals formed due to oxidation and the amount of stress the body sees in many different forms," said Fluitec CEO Frank Magnotti. “Autistic children are under stress all the time, and what we want to do is allow parents to measure the levels of free radicals in order to lower the levels and make them as stress free as possible."
The kit gives parents a much needed tool and is welcome news for many, including Janice McGreevey, a local New Jersey Autism Speaks leader and chairman of the Autism Speaks Walk in Long Branch, NJ whose twelve-year-old son is in the Autism spectrum, said she “was excited about what the development of the TestME™ Kit means for caregivers."
"Parents need to know what’s going on,” she said. “They need proof in some ways. There are so many different therapies and organizations trying to take your money while you are trying to make your child better, and it’s very difficult as a parent to gauge what type of therapy is going to work. This kit is a tremendous idea.”
A good example of how a parent could use the kit would be measuring, monitoring and managing an elimination diet. A parent would perform tests over a period of time and note what is trending during that period of time. According to Fluitec, a parent should initially use one kit, which contains two tests, over a month to get an initial base line result. After obtaining the initial result then use one kit per month on average, to measure how the item or activity is in comparison to the baseline results then build an individualized monitoring plan for an extended period of time, generally a minimum of ninety days, comparing those results along the way. Results will vary in each individual.
The kit is based on the concentration of Malondialdehyde (MDA) as a proven, valid biomarker to indicate Oxidative Stress. TestME™ Kit determines the amount of MDA and other aldehydes in urine. Results are expressed in the test sample’s color.
'You can spend hundreds of dollars and not know whether or not what you are doing is working. We based this test on medical research, and we’ve made it easy and affordable for parents to keep testing free radicals on a regular basis and help keep their child’s stress levels down. Giving parents a great tool, helping their child and potentially saving them money seems like a very good message to share today," Magnotti said.
