CarePoint Health Physicians Perform Pioneering Breast Surgery
Jersey City, NJ (PRWEB) April 02, 2014 -- A pioneering breast surgery was performed for the first time in Hudson County by Dr. Robbi Kempner, Director of Breast Surgery and Medical Director of the Breast Center at CarePoint Health, with reconstructive surgeons Dr. Cyrus Loghmanee, Dr. Dean Cerio and Dr. Charbel Chalfoun at Christ Hospital. The surgery - a bilateral mastectomy with a specialized reconstruction component – employed a microsurgical technique to remove the patient’s deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap from the lower abdomen which was then transferred to the chest. This method provided for both the successful removal of breast tissue and a post-operative effect that maintains a superior cosmetic result by using the patient’s own fatty tissue and skin. This groundbreaking breast reconstruction surgery is indicative of CarePoint Health’s continuing commitment to bring health care innovation and excellence to the residents of Hudson County and the region at large.
In a traditional bilateral mastectomy, a silicone implant is often used to reconstruct the breast area. The downside of this routine technique is that it can lead to hardening of the tissue and infection around the implant. Some surgeons transfer muscles from the abdomen to the breast area to combat the risk of infection, but the procedure can lead to scarring and some loss of abdominal function. Dr. Kempner and her team used an advanced method that circumvented these issues by transplanting the DIEP flap into the chest using cutting-edge microsurgical techniques. The advantage was clear: using the patient’s own tissue led to a natural look and feel to the affected area, with no loss of abdominal function.
The operation represents the first of its kind for Hudson County and greatly expands the capabilities and surgical options available to patients in the region. CarePoint Health offers the full spectrum of breast surgery and reconstruction options. Patients can now consider not only the best result for the removal of a breast tumor, but also the best post-operative quality of life.
