Kim Singh Receives Scholarship from NBCC Foundation
Greensboro, NC (PRWEB) May 06, 2014 -- The NBCC Foundation, an affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. (NBCC), recently awarded a 2014 NBCC Foundation minority scholarship to Kim Singh of Fairfield, Ohio. The minority scholarship is awarded to counseling students who commit to serving minority populations upon graduation.
The mission of the NBCC Foundation is to leverage the power of counseling by strategically focusing resources for positive change. The minority scholarship was created in 2013 to help ensure that the behavioral health needs of all Americans are met, regardless of language or culture. This program provides financial support to students who have substantial experience with the minority community they commit to serving after graduation. The Foundation received applications from 150 students from across the country for the five minority scholarships, and the Board of Trustees awarded an additional scholarship due to the high caliber of the applicants.
As one of six 2014 minority scholarship recipients, Ms. Singh will receive $5,000 to support her counseling education and facilitate her service to minority populations. Ms. Singh is a graduate of Ohio State University and is pursuing her master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling at Xavier University in Cincinnati. Following graduation, she plans to work at A Sound Mind Counseling as a licensed counselor, working with primarily minority populations. Ms. Singh currently works for Hamilton County Developmental Disabilities Services as a service facilitator, assisting individuals of all ages with a wide range of disabilities and co-occurring mental health concerns. She has always had a passion for advocacy and was raised with the value of service to others. She hopes to continue her work with minority populations and to expand her opportunities to educate people on the importance of diversity and racial identity.
The NBCC Foundation has also awarded six $5,000 military scholarships to increase the number of counselors available to serve military service members, veterans and their families, as well as six $5,000 rural scholarships to increase the number of counselors serving rural areas.
The NBCC Foundation plans to continue offering scholarships to increase the number of counselors in the areas where they are needed most. For more information or to make a gift in support of the Foundation’s mission, please visit http://www.nbccf.org.
