School Specialty, Inc. Honors Clare Ornburn, Recipient of Presidential Award for Excellence, at 2014 National Science Teachers Association Conference
Boston, Mass. (PRWEB) April 03, 2014 -- Today at the 2014 National Science Teachers Association Conference, Delta Education, a member of the School Specialty Science Family and part of School Specialty Inc. announced it is honoring Clare Ornburn, a 2014 Recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, at a special ceremony.
As the company’s featured guest at NSTA, Ornburn, a fourth-grade teacher at Ashway Elementary School in Ashway, R.I., part of GEMS-Net, a science and math consortium, will make a special appearance at the School Specialty booth, #415 on the exhibit floor, where fellow educators will have the opportunity to learn more about her award-winning classroom strategies, along with her “Top Ten Tips for New Teachers.” Ornburn will also discuss her classroom use of Delta Education’s Full Option Science System® (FOSS), the active-learning science program that engages students in science and engineering practices through active investigations of science concepts.
“It is an honor to congratulate Clare on this prestigious recognition,” said Bodie Marx, general manager, School Specialty Science. “Her ongoing dedication to elevating the study of science in the classroom inspires students in her district and beyond. We are thrilled to welcome her as our special guest at NSTA.”
Ornburn leads professional development sessions for teachers new to FOSS across an eight-district collaboration. She also volunteers her time to join other teacher leaders on a board that analyzes and discusses best practices in science and has allowed teachers from across the state into her classroom to observe her science lessons. For the past two years, she has worked on a multidistrict committee charged with writing a common mathematics curriculum for the southern portion of the State of Rhode Island to correspond with the Common Core State Standards. She has also worked with the University of Rhode Island to help integrate the Common Core Mathematics Standards into the science curriculum.
In March, Ornburn travelled to Washington, D.C. to accept The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. There, she joined 101 other outstanding K-12 science and mathematics teachers from across the country to receive her honor from President Obama. The winners are selected by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians, and educators following an initial selection process done at the state level.
About FOSS
FOSS is the leading inquiry-based science program in America. Developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley, and published by Delta Education, this research-based curriculum for elementary school students is the first program to reflect the national vision described in A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas (National Research Council, 2012). An all-new elementary program, FOSS Third Edition is based on the belief that students learn science by doing science. Research supports that the best way for students to understand the scientific process, learn important scientific and engineering concepts and develop creative thinking skills is to participate actively in scientific practices through their own investigations and analyses.
