By monitoring #BCBF14, I was able to find various authors and exhibitors who were at the fair and start up conversations with them.

The 2014 Bologna Children’s Book Fair was held at the Bologna Fair Centre in Bologna, Italy. This annual event is the most prestigious in children’s publishing. It allows for authors, illustrators, literary agents, licensors and licensees, packagers, distributors, printers, booksellers, and librarians to network and establish professional relationships with one another all while creating business partnerships.

Publish On Demand Global attended this year’s event with a very specific goal in mind: to include their authors from all over the world whose books may have made it to the fair, but they did not.

Through the power of social media, PODG was able to reach a large audience using their own original hashtag, #BCBF14, to host a Tweet-up to recap the fair. Managing Director of PODG, Kait Neese, live tweeted throughout the event. With the time difference, her updates may have gotten lost if it weren’t for a PODG team of U.S. based social media experts, Communications Director Shaina Wizov and Community Moderator Jeanine Vidal, to rebroadcast the tweets in real time.

The #BCBF14 hashtag caught the attention of many Bologna Children’s Book Fair guests who expressed that the #BolognaBookFair hashtag, generated by the fair itself, was too long.

“There was a lot of great feedback from our hashtag and eventually it seemed to take over on Twitter,” Ms. Wizov said. “By monitoring #BCBF14, I was able to find various authors and exhibitors who were at the fair and start up conversations with them.”
Ms. Neese regards the Tweet-up to be a successful endeavor put forth by the company. “The International Publishing Group (IPG), Ingram, and the Bologna Book Fair even joined in,” she said.
