artnet Auctions PresentsSeeing Stars: Celebrity Photography
New York/Berlin (PRWEB) April 04, 2014 -- artnet Auctions is thrilled to present Seeing Stars: Celebrity Photography, a special sale featuring work of tantalizing personalities by leading photographers. The sale will include over 50 photographs, with estimates ranging between US$1,500 and 50,000.
One photograph that perfectly encapsulates this sale’s theme is Neil Leifer’s Muhammad Ali knocks out Cleveland Williams (1966). This image documents the November 14, 1966 title fight between heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali and Cleveland Williams, which took place in the Houston Astrodome. Estimated at US$5,000 to 7,000, this is a wonderful opportunity to own a piece of history.
Outside the ring, Contemporary heavyweights Andy Warhol (American, 1928–1987) and Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960–1988) don boxing gloves in a Michael Halsband (American, b.1956) photograph to promote their 1985 painting show. Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat With Boxing Gloves (1985), estimated at US$12,000 to 15,000, is paired with an offset lithograph in colors from the same photo shoot. This is a rare opportunity to own, not only a photograph of Warhol and Basquiat, but also the iconic accompanying poster.
Additional highlights include David LaChapelle’s Hollywood Nights, which features a nude Pamela Anderson on a blue-green carpet with stars affixed to her body. Typical of LaChapelle’s photographs, his image of Pamela Anderson is both cheeky and sexy. One of the most exciting works in the sale is Richard Avedon’s Beatles (1976). Estimated at US$50,000 to 60,000, Avedon captures the distinct personalities in a psychedelic aesthetic while keeping the composition in harmony, much like the Beatles themselves.
