Dr Tariq Drabu was speaking from Manchester recently about an article which was recently published online by the Dentistry Today website. The article, which can be read here, discusses the new innovative treatment which could be used to cure some forms of cancer including oral cancer.
Dr Tariq Drabu, in Manchester, explained, “Studies in Plasma medicine and treatment is a brand new area of scientific study. It uses the pressure in plasma jets on biological tissue to treat certain medical conditions. The study was performed by a team from The University of Notre Dame. They looked at the DNA damage that is caused by atmospheric pressure plasma damage exposure. The study’s result indicates that new techniques developed could be used as effective treatments in cancer therapy as well as within the areas of dental care, hospital hygiene and the treatment of other medical problems like skin diseases wounds and as an antifungal treatment. This is exciting work and I am keen to read more about it.”
Dr Tariq Drabu of Manchester went on to say, “The research team analysed the DNA damage from the Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet in dry and wet environments. The researchers also studies plasma which was developed from helium mixtures. This was found to be theoretically able to eliminate cancerous tumour cells. I look forward to reading more about this amazing and important development in the fight against cancer and other serious diseases. It is such an important area of medical research. Incidents of mouth cancer are still too high and the mortality rate is high too. Although research and development on mouth cancer and all other forms of cancer continue, the news of a new form of treatment that could eradicate it is exciting indeed.”
Dr Tariq Drabu, in Manchester, closed by saying, “My colleagues and students will know how passionate I am about this subject. It is very important that as dentists we do all we can to support the continued study and research needed to develop effective treatments and cures for mouth cancer. In addition we should all be working together to help reduce incidences of this terrible disease by encouraging good daily oral hygiene practice and by helping our patients to stop smoking if they want to. This multi-pronged approach of scientific research to find a cure, and preventative education, is the only way we will dramatically reduce the instances of oral cancers and help to improve the overall oral health of the nation.”
