GetOutfitted, a web based start-up that rents ski and snowboard apparel and accessories through the mail, won the $25,000 first place prize at Colorado College’s Big Idea competition on Tuesday.
Now in its second year, The Big Idea competition aims to foster innovation and entrepreneurship among college students.
The panel of judges included Brenda Smith, a partner in the Garden of the Gods Club; Karen Kerr, who most recently ran an entrepreneurship program at the University of Southern California; Andrew Pyper, a best-selling author; Mike Slade, who held executive posts at Microsoft, NeXT Computer and Apple and now runs a Seattle venture capital firm; and Bob Selig, president of Davis Instruments.
The competitive field was solid with 7 teams pitching live in front of the judging panel. The $15,000 second place prize went to web-based startup KoldSnapp and third place $10,000 prize was split between a non-profit and an education-based program.
GetOutfitted, based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, took first place by highlighting their innovative approach to apparel in the ski industry and their early traction with customers. The company served more than 200 customers in 28 states and 9 countries in their first 100 days and has recruited high-profile manufacturing partners such as Patagonia, Obermeyer, Burton and Dakine. Julian Flores, Founder and CEO of GetOutfitted, explained, “We’re having a great first season and we’re ready to scale this aggressively so people can save money getting outdoors.”
The company plans to use the prize money to expand its affiliate network with resorts, hotels, travel agents, and tour operators.
