Axis Construction Wins First Place at Modular Building Institute's Awards of Distinction
Hauppauge, New York (PRWEB) April 07, 2014 -- Headquartered in Hauppauge, New York, Axis Construction, premier provider of construction management, design-build, and general contracting services, has been honored with the Modular Building Institute’s (MBI) first place Award of Distinction in the permanent modular education category for buildings over 10,000 square feet. The award was given for the design and construction of the Lehman College Child Care Center in Bronx, New York. Axis was recognized at MBI’s 31st Annual Convention & Tradeshow, held on March 21-24 in San Antonio, Texas. This state-of-the-art project was judged against distinguished entries from all over the world in this highly competitive international contest. Attended by more than 640 modular industry professionals, this tradeshow is the commercial modular industry’s leading event.
The Child Care Center at Lehman College, a senior college of the City University of New York located in the Bronx, exemplifies excellence, innovation, sustainability, and cost effectiveness in design and construction. This 12,000 square foot non-combustible steel building accentuates modularity with a central atrium and floating staircase in the lobby that provides natural daylight, passive air ventilation, and features a layered platform base for reading and other quiet activities. The lobby opens up on each side with glazed walls and doors for views and access to play areas or other campus buildings. The classrooms have large sliding doors at each end that open to allow natural ventilation and access to green growing walls that the kids will plant each year. Interior finishes are bright and colorful with open painted ceilings showing hanging lighting and ductwork. Axis reduced the construction schedule by 25 percent and selected numerous energy conserving features that lowered client costs significantly.
“The Axis team is extremely proud to have been honored with this highly-acclaimed industry award. We strive for excellence and innovation in every project we undertake and it’s very gratifying for our efforts to be recognized by the Modular Building Institute,” said Axis President and CEO Ralph Lambert.
The MBI Awards of Distinction, given to MBI members who are building manufacturers, dealers, and product and service providers, is the foremost awards program for the commercial modular industry. Relocatable, permanent, and renovated modular buildings, as well as industry marketing pieces, are considered for awards. An impartial panel of industry and non-industry construction and code experts, architects, engineers, and marketing professionals evaluate each entry based on architectural excellence, technical innovation, sustainability, cost effectiveness, energy efficiency, and calendar days to complete.
“Each year MBI recognizes the best modular construction projects and this year, we had over one hundred building entries and a very competitive contest. We want to congratulate Axis Construction for their outstanding projects and for winning first place in the permanent modular construction education category,” said Tom Hardiman, Executive Director of the Modular Building Institute.
For this project, Axis partnered with NRB, Inc., an off-site modular building design and manufacturing specialist with locations in the U.S. and Canada. The award-winning building was produced at NRB’s facility in Ephrata, PA. NRB is well known in the industry for its cutting-edge research and development, and for applying enhanced building science principles to their off-site construction.
Axis was also under consideration for an award in the permanent modular health care category of buildings over 10,000 square feet for their design and construction of the Adults and Children with Learning Disorders (ACLD) Health Services Center located in Bethpage, NY.
