Dr. Tariq Drabu from his Manchester based surgery said, “There is a clear indication that older men who do not exercise and sit at a desk all day have a higher risk of gum disease. Younger men with a healthier lifestyle that are active, appear to show no signs of the disease. Gum disease can be serious problem and if not treated, can result in tooth loss.”
Dr. Tariq Drabu went on to say, “I see a large number of patients that have gum disease and aren’t even aware of it. In many cases patients only realize there is a problem when they feel pain. Gum disease usually starts as gingivitis, which is red and swollen gums, this can sometimes come with pain. The most significant sign there is a problem is bleeding gums, especially while brushing. If not cared for, gingivitis can quickly become periodontitis, which is a serious gum problem where the gum separates from the tooth revealing the root. This is painful and can result in tooth loss if not taken care of.”
In closing, Dr. Tariq Drabu said, “Men are at high risk of getting gum disease if they don’t follow a healthy lifestyle and they don’t exercise. Dental health is exceptionally important in eradicating the disease. Those that sit at a desk all day should consider some form of exercise, even if it is a brisk walk around the block three times a week. Diet also plays an important role. Overall health can dramatically reduce the risk of contracting this disease and can help with overall dental health. Anyone who experiences bleeding while brushing should visit their local dentist to have it looked at. Gum disease is treatable and the sooner it’s treated, the better.”
