Dr Tariq Drabu Discusses the impact of Electronic Cigarettes in 2014 and the future ahead
(PRWEB) April 15, 2014 -- Dr Tariq Drabu is a well known Manchester dentist and oral surgeon with over twenty five years dentistry experience. Dr Tariq Drabu was born and educated in Manchester and graduated from Manchester University as one of the youngest ever dentists at the age of twenty one. He has worked at some of the largest and busiest dental hospitals in Saudi Arabia and is the owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice in Manchester. Dr Tariq Drabu is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for CATS at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. He also teaches oral surgery to postgraduate dentists.
Dr Tariq Drabu was discussing an article published on the Denistry Today website about how e-cigarettes may not be an upgrade to ordinary cigarettes. The full article can be read here.
Dr Tariq Drabu, in Manchester, said, “There has been so much research conducted on cigarette smoking and the effects on oral health. Over the years, dentists have learned that cigarette smoke can cause tooth discolouration, can increase the build-up of plaque and tartar, and increases the risk of gum disease. It is also believed that smoking can increase the risk of oral cancer. The problem is that electronic cigarettes are still relatively new and therefore there isn’t as much information to determine the impact these devices have on oral health.”
Dr Tariq Drabu went on to say, “The Denistry Today website (published on the 10th of January 2014 in the Denistry website - see link above) shows there have been some signs that electronic cigarettes do offer some benefits, such as they don’t give off an odour. Therefore, those using them don’t have stale cigarette breath, and they also don’t seem to cause discolouration of the teeth. However, that is all we know at the moment. As these are relatively new and there hasn’t been that much research concluded, no one can say how they will impact oral health moving forward.”
In closing, Dr Tariq Drabu said, “We would like to believe that there is a safer alternative to smoking and thousands of people are turning to electronic cigarettes because they don’t contain the toxins that tobacco have. Many of the patients I have spoken to that are using electronic cigarettes are doing so to help them give up smoking all together. But until we can find evidence to the fact that electronic cigarettes are safe on oral health, we cannot say that they are an improvement over ordinary cigarettes.”
