Documentary series dives into the history and politics of Bitcoin. The doc focuses on the ideological battle between the Silicon Valley/Wall Street establishment and Bitcoin's libertarian community.

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 08, 2014

SQ1.tv (pronounced "square one") announced the release of its Bitcoin documentary today. SQ1.tv is a new online television network launching later this year.

"We were working on our Bitcoin story as a part of SQ1.tv’s launch in June. Based on the news cycle, the story was too timely for us not to release it immediately," said Bhu Srinivasan, founder of SQ1.tv. "Our story dives into the politics of Bitcoin: The conflict we saw pits the early adopters with highly libertarian leanings vs. the VCs and entrepreneurs that are eager to embrace government regulation."

SQ1.tv's The Bitcoin Phenomenon is a cerebral, in-depth look at how the Bitcoin movement started and how it ended up where it is today. The documentary covers:

  • Bitcoin's founding, Satoshi Nakamoto, and key technology breakthroughs;
  • how Bitcoin derived its initial value;
  • the libertarians, crypto-anarchists, and speculators that helped drive early-adoption;
  • the VCs and entrepreneurs that are looking to sideline the politics of the early-adopters in order to take Bitcoin mainstream

"We were able to get very candid perspectives on this war within Bitcoin. It’s the Wall Street/Silicon Valley establishment vs. the movement. We got very lucky. We didn't realize when we were filming just how relevant our story was going to be. This is the central story of Bitcoin in 2014," added Srinivasan.

SQ1.tv received full access to the key players in the Bitcoin movement including:

  • Gavin Andresen, former lead developer of Bitcoin and the last known contact of Satoshi Nakamoto's
  • Peter Vessenes, the chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation
  • Erik Voorhees, a leading libertarian thinker in the movement
  • Trace Mayer, a well-known crypto-anarchist in the Bitcoin community
  • Jeremy Liew, a top venture capitalist investing in Bitcoin companies
  • Fred Ehrsam, a co-founder of one of the biggest startups in the Bitcoin ecosystem
  • Angela Keaton, director of operations at Antiwar.com

The story documents multiple perspectives on the future of Bitcoin. Some view Bitcoin's future as an invisible protocol; others view its future as an existential threat to fiat currencies and central banks.

"Bitcoin touches technology, mathematics, politics, economics, the CIA, the NSA, drugs, gambling, Silicon Valley, Wall Street, along with an unknown founder that inspires cultish reverence…rarely does a phenomenon touch so many topics,” said Srinivasan. “The politics are by far the most important and interesting aspect of Bitcoin.”

The Bitcoin Phenomenon comes with over 2 hours of extended interviews. The main program and 10 bonus segments are available exclusively on SQ1.tv to subscribers. SQ1.tv accepts Bitcoin.
