Saint Peter’s University recently became a member of the IBM Academic Initiative, a program that provides educators with the training materials, curriculum guides, software and hardware needed to teach in-demand business and technology skills. The resources provided through the IBM Academic Initiative will be incorporated into the master’s program in data science with a concentration in business analytics.

Saint Peter’s University recently became a member of the IBM Academic Initiative, a program that provides educators with the training materials, curriculum guides, software and hardware needed to teach in-demand business and technology skills. The resources provided through the IBM Academic Initiative will be incorporated into the master’s program in data science with a concentration in business analytics.

IBM, a world leader in data analytics and innovation, offers these resources to help build top academic programs as many students graduate from colleges and universities without the skills most employers require, particularly in the big data technology field. Academic Initiative students will be better prepared for big data careers as business analysts, data scientists, cybersecurity professionals, software engineers and more. Students will also have access to dozens of software programs in the classroom including Cognos Business Intelligence, DB2 Enterprise Developer and InfoSphere BigInsights.

“We look forward to all of the opportunities our data science students will have access to through the IBM Academic Initiative partnership,” said Jeffrey Handler, vice president of enrollment and marketing at Saint Peter’s University. “The Initiative will introduce our students to real-world challenges and enterprise level big data technology, which will provide them with the valuable skills required by today’s employers.”

The master’s program in data science with a concentration in business analytics will be offered beginning in the fall of 2014. The degree program integrates computer science, statistics, machine learning, and Hadoop with data-based business management principles to inform business intelligence. The program is the first of its kind in the N.Y./N.J. area. The curriculum reflects the most current approaches to the management of data science technology as developed by leaders in the industry such as IBM, Cloudera and Oracle Corporation.
