Houston, TX (PRWEB) April 09, 2014 -- ELECTRICITY
Extremes:
1. Highest bill: Seattle, WA at $134.53
2. Lowest bill: Los Angeles, CA at $45.43
3. Largest Month over Month (MOM) increase: San Francisco, from $104.00 to $111.20
4. Largest MOM decrease: Houston, TX from $129.44 to $100.62
Seattle, WA, once again had the highest electricity bill at $134.53 for the month of March. Electricity rates in Seattle held steady, however usage was still particularly high in March. In fact, Seattle had the highest usage of all the cities in the index for March.
The largest increase in monthly bill was San Francisco, CA from $104.00 in February to $111.20 in March. This increase was due to a slightly higher usage rate for the month of March.
Los Angeles, CA had the lowest bill at $45.43 in March. This is typical for Los Angeles, as spring temperatures have remained warm for that region. Houston, TX had the largest month over month decrease from $129.44 in February to $100.62 in March. This was due to the overall usage dropping for this region. Electricity rates held steady from February through March.
NATURAL GAS
Extremes:
1. Highest bill: Philadelphia, PA at $152.50
2. Lowest bill: Dallas, TX at $23.19
3. Largest MOM increase: Chicago, IL from $114.84 to $126.60
4. Largest MOM decrease: Philadelphia, PA from $193.33 to $152.50
Philadelphia, PA remained at the top spot with the highest natural gas bill at $152.50 in March. New York City, NY came in 2nd at $142.97. Late cold fronts swept through this region during the month of March, increasing usage. This trend will slowly start to taper off at the beginning of April.
Dallas, TX, once again had the lowest natural gas bill at $23.19 for the month of March. The usage and natural gas rates remained fairly steady for that region. As the winter season finally comes to an end, this region’s natural gas bill will keep declining.
Chicago, IL also had the largest month over month increase, from $114.84 in February to $126.60 in March. This was primarily due to the natural gas rates increasing for the month of March, not to mention the temperatures remained cold for the entire month.
The city that saw the largest month over month decrease was Philadelphia, PA, from $193.33 to $152.50. Yes, this was also the largest MOM decrease, but remains the most expensive bill compared to the other cities of the index.
Since we saw the winter season carry over through March, natural gas bills did not decline as predicted. Going forward we should see less arctic blasts pass through the Midwest and northeastern region of the country, ultimately reducing natural gas costs.
