Medical Imaging Center Announcing Advancements in Mammograms
Miami, FL (PRWEB) April 10, 2014 -- The Center for Diagnostic Imaging in Miami announces a new advancement in mammography screening, 3D mammography.
Detecting cancer in its earliest stages provides the best chance that it can be dealt with most effectively. Until recently, the best way to detect breast cancer was through the use of digital mammography. While digital mammography is still one of the most advanced technologies available for breast screenings, it only provides doctors with a two-dimensional view of the breast.
Since the breast is composed of pockets of dense tissue surrounded by fat, when it is X-rayed, the image created may be hazy. The overlapping tissue in the image can make it difficult to see tiny areas and other subtle signs of early cancer.
3D mammography, or breast tomosynthesis, is a revolutionary technology that gives radiologists the ability to identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping breast tissue. It uses high-powered computing to convert digital breast images into a stack of thin layers or “slices”. This builds a 3D image of the breast. During the exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images from multiple angles.
This technology helps radiologists find even the smallest of cancerous areas; it also helps to rule out “false positives”, reducing the number of women who are called back for a diagnostic mammogram when they don’t actually need one. 3D mammography is especially helpful in detecting cancers in dense breast tissue.
The digital mammography experts at the Center for Diagnostic Imaging and Comprehensive Breast Care Centers provide women with the most advanced care available to help keep them healthy.
