Pradaxa Lawsuit Conference Scheduled for April 9th, Wright & Schulte LLC Reports
Columbus, OH (PRWEB) April 09, 2014 -- Wright & Schulte LLC, an experienced personal injury law firm representing plaintiffs in Pradaxa lawsuits, reports that a Status Conference has been scheduled for April 9, 2014 at 10:30 CT in the federal multidistrict ligation underway in Illinois for Pradaxa bleeding claims. According to court documents, at least 2,488 Pradaxa lawsuits have been filed in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Illinois on behalf of patients who allegedly suffered serious episodes of internal bleeding due to Pradaxa. Court records indicate that the federal Pradaxa lawsuit litigation is preparing to convene the proceeding’s first bellwether trials later this year. A Pretrial Order issued on March 5, 2014 scheduled the start of jury selection in the first Pradaxa trial for September 8, 2014, with Opening Statements starting on September 15, 2014. The remaining trials will begin on December 1, 2014, February 17, 2015 and March 23, 2015. According to Wright & Schulte LLC, these trials will help to shed light on the strength of plaintiffs’ claims, and could predict how juries will rule in similar Pradaxa lawsuits.
Pradaxa is a blood thinner that was cleared for sale by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010. The medication is indicated to prevent strokes in people with atrial fibrillation, and was marketed as an improved alternative to warfarin, a blood thinner sold under the brand name Coumadin. According to court documents, plaintiffs in Pradaxa lawsuits claim that the drug’s manufacturer concealed its dangerous side effects, particularly the lack of an antidote for Pradaxa bleeding. They point out that warfarin bleeding can be stopped with the administration of vitamin K, and further allege that marketing representing Pradaxa as an improvement over warfarin was misleading.
In October 2013, the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices (ISMP) reported that of all of the prescription drugs monitored by the FDA, Pradaxa was named in the most adverse even reports in 2012. A majority of the 3,300 reports naming the blood thinner that year involved Pradaxa bleeding, including several hundred fatalities. The ISMP also noted that Pradaxa side effects proved fatal in 18% of the cases, while injuries linked to warfarin resulted in fatal outcomes just 6.5% of the time.
