Northern Virginia Students Present Environmental Projects to Compete for Prizes
Fairfax, VA (PRWEB) April 10, 2014 -- Northern Virginia students ventured out into their communities during the 2013-2014 school year to create environmental change. Working with national non-profit Earth Force and many local community partners, students from 5 area schools were selected as finalist to present 10 projects as part of the Caring for Our Watersheds contest, supported by international agriculture company, Agrium. The finalist classrooms are presenting their progress at the School Environmental Action Showcase, presented by NoVA Outside, on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at George Mason University in Fairfax, competing for cash prizes between $300 and $1,000. All 26 program groups that applied will be eligible for project implementation funding provided by Agrium.
“The creativity this contest affords students is beneficial for our environment and the communities we serve,” says Kurt Moser, Senior Program Manager at Earth Force. “Anytime we can engage and involve our youth in environmental conversation benefits us all. They are actively seeking ways to make our communities sustainable for future generations and we are here to help them.”
The School Environmental Action Showcase provides an opportunity for students and teachers to show off their efforts and for schools, non-profits, parks, nature centers, and environment-oriented businesses to learn about each other’s projects. Approximately 500 students from Alexandria City Public Schools, Arlington Public Schools, and Fairfax County Public Schools are expected to attend, connecting with other young people and engaging in partner-led environmental activities.
“The School Environmental Action Showcase allows young people to come together and celebrate their investment in their environment,” says Elaine Tholen, co-founder of NoVA Outside. “Students are always very proud to talk about what is happening at their school and the School Environmental Action Showcase allows them to connect with their peers to share and learn.”
