Stevens Institute of Technology Welcomes Dr. Craig Barrett to Examine America’s Challenges for Economic Growth
Hoboken, N.J. (PRWEB) April 15, 2014 -- Dr. Craig Barrett, a renowned scientist, corporate leader and education advocate, will headline the President’s Distinguished Lecture Series at Stevens Institute of Technology on April 23, 2014.
His talk, entitled “Economic Competitiveness in the 21st Century,” will examine how the addition of nearly 3 billion people into the free market economy from liberalized countries in Asia and Eastern Europe at the close of the 20th century has been the biggest factor impacting America’s future economic competitiveness.
Dr. Barrett joined Intel Corporation in 1974, serving as president, CEO and chairman before retiring in 2009. He is a leading advocate for improving education and for raising awareness of the value of technology in improving global social and economic standards.
“Dr. Barrett is an iconic leader who steered Intel’s success through some challenging times and some periods of dynamic growth,” said Stevens President Nariman Farvardin. “A consummate technical professional whose vision and spirit of innovation have made a mark on businesses and consumers worldwide, Dr. Barrett’s influence has been felt in education, technology innovation, and international relations. The Stevens community is thrilled to welcome him as our fourth President’s Distinguished Lecturer.”
During his lecture at Stevens, Dr. Barrett will argue that GDP growth, job recovery, wage rates and asset valuation fall short in measuring the vibrancy of America’s economy.
“Looking forward, countries have limited options in driving economic growth. Investments in education, research and development, and setting the right environment for innovation are the key variables that will determine winners and losers. The U.S. research university, the most important national innovation in the 20th century, is especially central to U.S. competitiveness,” said Dr. Barrett.
Dr. Barrett chairs numerous organizations, research centers and non-profits focused on education and innovation, including, BASIS Charter Schools, Achieve, K12 Inc., Change the Equation, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Society for Science and the Public.
Previously, he chaired or sat on the boards of the National Academy of Engineering, the Clinton Global Initiative, the United Nations Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies and Development; the Business Coalition for Student Achievement; and the National Innovation Initiative.
The President’s Distinguished Lecture Series, launched by Dr. Farvardin in October 2012, offers the Stevens community unprecedented access to influential scientists, technologists and policymakers who are shaping 21st century society. It focuses on important topics in science and technology, the linkages between societal issues and advances in science and technology, and related policy issues. The series is free of charge and open to all Stevens students, faculty, alumni, staff and guests who register prior to the event.
Dr. Barrett’s lecture will take place in Stevens’ DeBaun Auditorium at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2014. Immediately following, attendees are invited to attend a reception in the Atrium of the Stevens’ Lawrence T. Babbio Center for Technology Management.
