Mayor Martin J. Walsh to Deliver New England Law | Boston’s Graduation Address
Boston, MA (PRWEB) April 15, 2014 -- Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh will deliver the address at New England Law | Boston’s 103rd Commencement on Friday, May 23, 2014. Mayor Walsh, a dedicated advocate for working people and a proud product of the City of Boston, was sworn in as mayor in January 2014.
“We are delighted that Mayor Walsh, a champion of equal rights, education, and economic opportunity, will join us at Commencement,” said Dean John F. O’Brien. “New England Law has developed a reputation as a ‘school for doers,’ and we see a kindred spirit in Mayor Walsh. We look forward to welcoming him to our school.”
In 1997, at the age of 29, Mayor Walsh won election to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing the 13th Suffolk District in Boston, which ranks among the most diverse in the state. During his 16 years in the House, Mayor Walsh established himself as a leader on creating and protecting jobs and growing the economy. A co-founder and former board member of the Neighborhood House Public Charter School, Mayor Walsh has long been an aggressive advocate for strong public schools.
Mayor Walsh was a vocal early supporter of marriage equality and compiled a strong record in support of communities of color, immigrants, and seniors, among others. He also became known as the State House leader on substance abuse and recovery issues.
After high school, Mayor Walsh followed in his father’s footsteps to become a union laborer. He rose through the leadership of his union and eventually served from 2011 to 2013 as head of the Building and Construction Trades Council of the Metropolitan District, where he worked with business and community leaders and city officials to promote high-quality development and new jobs for the city. He is a graduate of Boston College.
As in years past, graduates will process from the law school to the Citi Performing Arts Center, Wang Theatre. The ceremony will also feature the awarding of honorary degrees to distinguished recipients and diplomas to students from the law school’s day and evening divisions.
