Tariq Drabu Warns Patients on Increased Risk of Oral Cancer
(PRWEB) April 16, 2014 -- Tariq Drabu is a leading dentist and specialist oral surgeon based in Manchester. He is also the owner of the very successful Langley Dental Practice in Middleton. Dr Drabu is the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Assessment Clinic and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. In addition to this, he is a teacher and mentor to postgraduate dental students.
Tariq Drabu was speaking about an article published in the Dentistry website about how oral health impacts oral cancers. The full article can be read here.
Tariq Drabu said, “Recent studies have been conducted by the University Of Glasgow Dental School as part of the International Agency for Research on Cancer. This new study has revealed that there is a link between oral health and oral cancer. This new information shows that poor dental health can lead to mouth, oesophagus, larynx and pharynx cancers.”
Tariq Drabu went on to say, “Up until now we knew the main causes of oral cancer included smoking, alcohol and the HPV or human papillomavirus. With further research it has been revealed that dental health can also play a significant role. In 2010 there were over six thousand people diagnosed with oral cancer in the UK, with a majority of these being men. The research which was conducted using almost two thousand patients in nine countries has helped identify dental health as a possible key cause for oral cancer in the country. It has also been noted that patients with dentures are at a higher risk and also those that use mouthwash excessively.”
Tariq Drabu closed by saying, “Patients that have lost their own teeth and have dentures have a false sense of security. Because they don’t have original teeth, they don’t think they need to visit their dentist on a regular basis, this is not the case. Even those with partial dentures are prone to gum disease and the first sign of this is bleeding gums. Gum disease is one of the most common dental problems seen in my practice on a daily basis and it is curable. I would recommend any patients who notice their gums bleeding, swollen or uncomfortable visit their dentist as soon as possible. Now that we know there can be a link between dental health and oral cancer, it is a sign for patients to keep their regular check-ups to ensure their teeth and mouth are healthy, this can reduce complications later on.”
