Both in times of growth and amid a sluggish economy, one sector of the footwear industry appears to rise steadily--the comfort shoe sector. After all, everyone needs quality footwear and many are willing to invest in shoes that are both comfortable to wear and fashion-forward.
Footwear manufacturers are continuing to study pressure points as well as range of motion, all in an effort to create footwear that fits well and keeps the feet (and legs) comfortable even on long or stressful days. But beyond simply creating comfortable shoes that fit well, footwear industry executives are also responding to increased demand, largely driven by baby boomers, for shoe designs that not only feel good but look great, too. For years, consumers generally sacrificed one aspect for the other, but research, technology and strategic partnerships with top designers have come together, creating greater ability to merge these aspects together to delight a growing consumer base.
With host Jimmy Johnson, "Leading Edge" has created programming for Public Television to highlight shifts in the footwear industry and the innovative ways manufacturers have developed to respond to societal demands. "Leading Edge" will feature researchers and industry leaders who will discuss both progress and challenges within the industry.
Leading Edge is distributed to and developed for Public Television across the United States. The show is not distributed through or associated with PBS. Please visit http://www.leadingedgeseries.com for more information.
