When Fresh Coat of Jackson owner Carlis Faler’s wife Tonya became a breast cancer survivor in 2013, the couple had an idea – they wanted to give a free room painting to someone who was facing the same challenges.
“We personally know the hardship and struggle other people battling breast cancer are going through and we thought it would be a nice gesture to offer a free room painting to someone else dealing with those challenges. We wanted to brighten someone’s day,” Faler said.
Fresh Coat offers professional residential and commercial painting services including interior and exterior painting, wood staining and refinishing, wallpaper removal and many other services for nearly every protective coating application.
The franchise, which is locally owned and operated, asked the community for nominations for who should receive the room painting. Julie Staires, who is currently battling breast cancer, saw their call for nominations on Facebook when a friend shared the post, but she had no idea she had been nominated or that Tonya had selected her as the winner.
“I was really surprised when Fresh Coat contacted me and that I was the recipient of the room painting … I feel so honored to receive this gift, just as I have finished 7 months of treatment! My girls and I are so excited to brighten a room. I’ve not been in my home very long, and have not had the strength or energy to do anything to it,” Staires said.
The family is planning to have Fresh Coat of Jackson paint the dining room.
“In the past, so many good memories have been made around our dining table that we think a ‘fresh coat’ of paint will be a great start to making new memories after cancer for us,” Staires said. “What an incredible gift. Thank you Fresh Coat.”
Faler said he’s happy Fresh Coat was in a position to make a difference in someone’s day – and home.
“We wanted to do something for someone who is going through what we went through and this gives us a way to do something nice for someone deserving and showcase our work,” he said.
