Attorney Jon Saia Acts as Instructor in DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Course
Columbus, OH (PRWEB) April 16, 2014 -- Columbus OVI Attorney Jon J. Saia recently served as one of the instructors for a three-day DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Course that was held in Cincinnati, Ohio. The lawyer, provided training alongside nationally recognized instructor Robert F. LaPier, as well as instructors Kelly Farrish and Rob Lyons. This serves as the third course in which Attorney Saia has served as an instructor. Mr. Saia is one of the founding members of The Law Offices of Saia & Piatt, Inc.
Attorney Saia completed his National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Instructor Training in 2005. He was trained by Mr. LaPier.
The course, which is endorsed by the NHTSA and IACP, involves rigorous training—eight hours of training a day, though this sometimes runs longer. In the course that Attorney Saia recently participated in, the students were taught about all aspects of DWI/OVI detection and standardized field sobriety testing. They received an overview of drunk driving statistics; the effects of alcohol consumption on the human body; the legal aspects of DWI cases; the three phases of DWI/OVI detection (vehicle in motion, personal contact and pre-arrest screening), and more.
The majority of the course was devoted to teaching students the proper procedures for standardized field sobriety tests, which involved hands-on training in which they administered the tests on each other and even on live subjects, or individuals who had actually consumed alcohol and who had various blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels. Of the live subjects, there was one “ringer” who had consumed no alcohol. The students were required use standardized field sobriety testing to estimate the live subjects’ BAC levels based on signs of impairment that they exhibited.
After the students practiced, they were required to administer the SFSTs on each other in strict compliance with NHTSA and IACP standards. Their performance was evaluated by Attorney Saia and the other instructors. The students were also required to take a written final exam, in which they needed to answer at least 80 percent of the questions correctly before they could complete their training.
In addition to Attorney Saia’s certification as an SFST instructor, he has also been certified in the operation, diagnostic verification and calibration of the BAC DataMaster. Mr. Saia is a highly experienced OVI lawyer who has more than two decades of experience practicing law. The main focus areas of his practice are OVI defense, defense against traffic violations and general criminal defense.
