The North America Office of Duesseldorf Tourism and Duesseldorf Airport Announce: Countdown to 12th Duesseldorf Marathon: April 27, 2014
Düsseldorf, Germany (PRWEB) April 17, 2014 -- With great views, top conditions, and events galore, it’s no wonder the annual METRO GROUP Marathon Düsseldorf, now in its 12th year (2014 date: April 27), has quickly become one of the fastest growing marathons in Germany, and more and more international attendees are catching on to the supreme conditions for an excellent – and record-breaking - running experience.
In a city that ranks 6 on a list of global cities in quality of life, the route is mostly flat and takes runners and spectators on a double-loop around the city’s biggest attractions, including Düsseldorf’s historic Old Town (home to the longest bar in the world – 260 bars and pubs in under a square mile), famous shopping boulevard Königsallee, and modern Media Harbor with its variety of stunning super-star architecture.
In addition, the city’s elevation makes the route a record-oriented runner’s paradise, and each year, new records are broken. In 2013, Dereje Debele Tulu from Ethiopia came in at 2:07:48, topping the 2012 record by Seboka Tola, also from Ethiopia.
Last but not least, an unusual program makes the race even more entertaining for everyone: A “Road Relay Race” is part of the marathon, and up to 10,000 people participate each year, including teenagers and 2,500 corporate relay teams, with four runners per group splitting the route and competing against others. Children and teenagers get to start the race with everyone else and then change course towards a separate finish line in Old Town after 4.2 kilometers.
After the race, a unique reward awaits athletes: a beer garden serves non-alcoholic beer to the thousands of runners to enjoy - possibly the world’s largest non-alcoholic beer garden.
Whether you attend METRO GROUP Marathon Düsseldorf as a participant or spectator, Düsseldorf is a great travel destination, and easy to reach from anywhere. There are seven direct flights from North American cities alone, taking the hassle out of traveling to foreign marathon locations and allowing American runners – as well as those from across the globe – to arrive full of energy and ready to break more records.
