1% for the Planet Transitioning to Second Generation of Senior Leadership
Waitsfield, VT (PRWEB) April 17, 2014 -- 1% for the Planet, the world’s largest environmental network, recently announced the departure of Chief Executive Officer Terry Kellogg. After a remarkable nine-year record of accomplishments with the organization, Kellogg will transition his responsibilities to Interim CEO John Tashiro, 1% for the Planet’s current Operating Director.
1% for the Planet was created in 2002 by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and Craig Mathews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies, as a way to connect environmentally conscious brands with environmental nonprofits. In just over 10 years, 1% for the Planet has developed into a global movement with more than 1,200 member businesses in 48 countries donating at least 1% of sales to a broad variety of sustainability initiatives. The movement, which started with only 21 brands, recently celebrated $100 million in cumulative giving.
Kellogg has spent 20 years working at the intersection of business and the environment, leading the reality of a triple bottom line concept for a large number of global brands including Timberland.
Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia and co-founder of the network notes, “1% for the Planet is all about using business to inspire positive change – and Terry’s leadership is a major reason for our success. We’re sorry to see him go, but Terry is leaving 1% for the Planet in great shape, with a rock solid foundation on which we will continue to grow.”
Among the network milestones under Kellogg’s stewardship:
- Membership growth from less than 100 to more than 1,200 companies in 48 countries including trend-setters in CSR Clif Bar, New Belgium and Mountain Equipment Co-op.
- Annual giving growth from less than $3 million to more than $25 million.
- Cumulative $100 million contribution to the Planet from member companies.
- Staff growth from zero to 15, and operating budget growth from less than $100,000 to more than $2 million.
Kellogg added, “I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to lead 1% for the Planet and to have played a part in scaling it. Our successes though were never about the efforts of just one person. I have never had the occasion to work with a more talented staff or Board. Their passion and commitment levels ensure that we will see continued growth and impact from this incredible organization.”
Kellogg moves on to build and run a new foundation that will also work at the intersection of business and the environment. Tashiro joined 1% for the Planet almost one year ago with a rich background in marketing and leadership experience, having worked with brands such as Coca-Cola and Fair Trade.
