EPA Invites Philadelphia Insurance to Join Green Power Partnership
Bala Cynwyd, PA (PRWEB) April 21, 2014 -- Philadelphia Insurance Companies (PHLY) announces that its support of green power has earned the company a place in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Green Power Partnership. PHLY has purchased Renewable Energy Certificates equivalent to 100 percent of the Company’s electricity use in its 48 offices nationwide. This purchase displaces approximately 2,324 mega tons of carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to taking 484 cars off the road for one year. *
“The insurance industry plays a critical role in the formation of a safe, secure, and sustainable society. Responsible management of our Company’s impact on the natural environment is a piece of that sustainability puzzle,” explained PHLY CEO Bob O’Leary. “PHLY’s support of green power is part of our ongoing commitment to responsibly address our environmental impact and is the latest initiative in our effort to strengthen our sustainability program.”
PHLY is one of only eleven Green Power Partners (GPP) that identifies as part of the insurance industry. PHLY is also one of only two members of the insurance industry whose green power purchase qualifies to be recognized as part of the GPP’s Leadership Club. Throughout April and May 2014, GREENPHLY will sponsor five programs to support green initiatives and promote Earth Day 2014. More than 800 employees will participate, donating 60 hours and $1,600 to environmental causes.
2013 GREENPHLY initiatives include:
• 500+ PHLY employees nationwide participated in GREENPHLY events including volunteer, education, and green fundraising initiatives
• 1,613 coats collected benefiting 24 charities across the U.S. as part of GREENPHLY’s National Coat Drive Challenge
• 6,800 miles biked and 6,674 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions avoided through BIKEPHLY commuter program
• $1,000+ in gas saved by employees in the BIKEPHLY commuter program

The Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program that encourages organizations to use green power as a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with conventional electricity use and promotes Partners’ green power leadership. The EPA identifies green power as electricity generated from environmentally preferable resources such as solar, wind, geothermal, low-impact biomass, and low-impact hydro resources. The program’s more than 1,500 partners, including Fortune 500 (R) companies, local, state and government agencies, manufacturers and retailers, trade associations, and colleges and universities, are collectively using more than 28 billion kWh of green power annually. This is equivalent to the annual carbon dioxide emissions from electricity use of more than three million average American homes.*
