New Elliott Street and Oliver Street Schools Start Construction in Newark, New Jersey
Newark, NJ (PRWEB) April 18, 2014 -- Gilbane Building Company, the New Jersey Schools Development Authority (NJSDA), legislators, local officials, and Newark School District leaders recently gathered for an event to mark the start of construction at the sites of the future Elliott Street School and Oliver Street Elementary School in Newark, New Jersey. These projects are part of the NJSDA’s commitment to providing students with a proper place to be educated. Gilbane Building Company is the construction manager for both projects.

The new 137,000 square foot Oliver Street Elementary School will replace the existing 144 year old school, and will address the current overcrowding at the school. The new facility is designed to accommodate 848 students from Grades Pre-K to 8 and is situated in downtown Newark, encompassing an entire city block.
The Elliott Street School, a 138,000 square foot facility, will be located on the site of the former school on Elliott Street, which was struck by lightning and condemned after a serious fire in July 2006. This new facility for the Newark School District is designed for Kindergarten to Grade 8 education, and will also accommodate 848 students.
Both school buildings include state-of-the-art facilities comprising of general classrooms, specialized instructional classrooms and labs, media center, multi-purpose/assembly room, cafeteria, gymnasium and outdoor play areas, as well as administrative and support facilities.
Design-build construction contract value inclusive of design fees were $37,937,000 for the Elliott Street School and $40,895,000 for the Oliver Street School. Construction of both schools is anticipated for completion in time for the 2016-2017 school year.
