“We are looking at chord soloing over a blues here and this works great over a four chord in the key of G,” says MacLennan. “The four chord is C7 and here is a nice melodic lick I use all the time.” Jon demonstrates this cool chordal soloing lick as follows: eighth fret of the fourth string with third finger; fifth fret of the second string with first finger; and eighth fret of the first string with fourth finger — which is a C7 Triad. Next Jon moves to a C13 chord which consists of the second fret of the fourth string with first finger; third fret of the second string with second finger; and fifth fret of the first string with fourth finger. From there, MacLennan moves to a C Major Triad by fretting the second fret of the fourth string with second finger; first fret of the second string with first finger; and third fret of the first string with fourth finger; and then he makes it a C7 by adding the Bb (B flat) on the third fret of the third string with his third finger. Next, Jon frets the third fret of the fourth string with third finger and third fret of the second string with fourth finger, and slides to the fifth fret; and then adds the third fret of the first string with first finger and then the fifth fret of the third string with third finger. Finally, Jon ends the lick with some tri-tones with the first finger on the first fret of the fifth string; second finger on the second fret of the fourth string; and third finger on the third fret of the third string. After which, Jon continues the lesson by performing the lick over a backing track. Guitar tabs are available at BluesGuitar.com.
