Granite Peak Publications Presents Ten Trip Planning Tips for Yellowstone National Park
Oakland, CA (PRWEB) April 23, 2014 -- To celebrate 2014 National Park Week, April 19 through 27, Granite Peak Publications offers ten tips for the best trip ever. Feel free to share them, with attribution to author Janet Chapple.
Ten tips for planning a great trip to Yellowstone National Park
1. Do plan to camp or reserve lodgings in more than one place. A few nights in each of two to four locales will maximize what you’ll see and minimize driving time.
—BUT—
2. Don't expect to see everything in one trip or visit too many different places. Allow time for the unexpected bison jam or to catch a second eruption of a phenomenal geyser.
3. Be prepared to do some walking. Going a mile or two away from any road can be very enjoyable—and is guaranteed to take you away from crowds.
4. Include at least one area just outside the park in your itinerary: the Grand Tetons, Cody, Red Lodge, West Yellowstone, and the Gallatin Canyon are all good choices.
5. Know the Yellowstone seasons (http://www.yellowstonetreasures.com/seasons/). At 7000- to 8000-foot elevations, spring does not come until sometime in May, and even then some roads may be blocked by snow. Autumn begins early in September, and winter is long! Bring layers of clothing but plenty of sunscreen.
6. Be aware that Yellowstone’s roads are slow, often full of potholes, and that some may be undergoing construction.
7. Plan to be on the roads early and late in the day. Avoid crowds by staying off the main roads between 10 am and 5 pm whenever possible.
8. Take binoculars or a spotting scope as well as your camera, especially for animal watching. Cell phone use is still somewhat limited in Yellowstone.
9. Prepare the kids: watch videos, read from Yellowstone Treasures and other books about the area or the animals, tell them how different it will be (wild animals, staying outdoors, no TV). Let them do some of the planning.
10. Check at the visitor center at Old Faithful Village for predicted geyser eruption times. Your patience in waiting for some of the spectacular predictable geysers will be amply rewarded! During summer you can call 307-344-2751 for the next eruption times for Old Faithful and a few other geysers.
About the Company: Granite Peak Publications published the updated fourth edition of the Yellowstone Treasures guidebook in 2013, available in print (at http://www.yellowstonetreasures.com/yellowstone-treasures-guidebook) or as an e-book in EPUB, PDF, Nook, and Kindle formats. The guidebook describes all the possibilities, without prescribing what visitors should do or see. New features include:
• A dozen new pictures
• Fully revised maps that show recent road changes
• Updated geological information to reflect current research on what’s under Yellowstone and how it works
• A new glossary of geological and other scientific terms
The companion website to the book, http://www.yellowstonetreasures.com, was recently redesigned for mobile viewing. Articles describe places to see, geyser eruptions to wait for and marvel at, short hikes to take, and tips on avoiding the millions of other visitors. The author posts her news and views about Yellowstone National Park and her Yellowstone projects on her blog (http://www.yellowstonetreasures.com/author-blog/).
About the Author: Montana native Janet Chapple’s association with Yellowstone goes back to very early childhood, when her parents worked at Old Faithful a few summers starting in 1939. In 2000, Janet named her publishing company after the highest mountain in Montana in honor of her grandfather Fred Inabnit, who led climbing expeditions in the early 1900s into the Beartooth Range, where Granite Peak is located. Janet also cotranslated a Belgian travelogue entitled Yellowstone, Land of Wonders, published by University of Nebraska Press in May 2013.
