Dr Tariq Drabu was speaking about an article published in the Dentistry Today website on high fluoride toothpaste for braces patients. The full article can be found here.
Dr Tariq Drabu in Manchester said, “A study conducted in Sweden suggested that high fluoride toothpaste can reduce the risk of white marks on teeth for braces patients. Patients that use braces to correct their bite wear these items for extended periods, in some cases years. Over the years the rest of their teeth mark and stain, yet the part of the tooth under the brace remains the same, this means when we remove the braces, there is a mark which cannot be removed.”
Dr Tariq Drabu went on to say, “High fluoride toothpaste is an effective way to keep teeth in good condition and reduce the risk of stains and marks, this means when the patient has their braces removed, there are no unwelcome spots. Most patients that wear braces are in their teenage years, the perfect time to correct crooked teeth for a perfect bite. This means that when the braces are removed and there are marks on the teeth, these patients are self-conscious and looking for a way to get their teeth the same colour.”
Dr Tariq Drabu closed in saying, “It is such welcome news that something as simple as a high fluoride toothpaste can make such a difference to these patients. The study was conducted using over four hundred patients of which half used high fluoride toothpaste and the other half used regular toothpaste. The results were excellent with forty five percent of those using regular toothpaste finding they were left with white spots and over thirty percent of those that use high fluoride toothpaste had no marks at all.”
