Christ of King and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Elementary students have received funding from the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City to invest their students more heavily in STEM education.

In recent field trips to techJOYnT Academy, students delved into an artistic aspect of the digital world with Game Design in a one day crash course field trip. Introducing art into the STEM Acronym (STEAM), the class takes place at a techJOYnT classroom in which each child is led through basics of programming and using quadratic functions to digitize playable characters on a mathematically scaled field. Sound difficult? At first, Game Design instruction might sound like.. well, fun and games, right? However, instructors can now teach a student practical STEM principals cloaked in a platform they already love, video gaming. Students complete a game by the end of class for a fulfilling experience that gives them ownership of the technology that inspires them. The field trip includes a souvenir file of the 2-D game created by each student.

The Schools involved in these field trips supported by the Archdiocese had the option of half day or full day instruction. A full day of instruction begins with video game design, and wraps up after lunch with intro to robotics.

Introducing a programing element into many subjects kids are already passionate about, LEGO’s and techJOYnT’s robotics and video game courses provides professional instruction on relevant STEM subjects beyond baking soda volcanoes and marshmallow and toothpick double helix structures.

Parents surveyed after the half day course at techJOYnT unanimously reported that they thought their students had fun with the subject and that they would be very interested in 8 week STEM enrichment programs being offered for their school. Every parent reported that they learned new things about STEM themselves during the field trip. One 3rd grade mother had this to say about her experience “[The Instructor’s] patience and ability to keep the children focused is amazing. They loved it!” 50% of parents who completed the survey wanted more information on summer camp and STEM enrichment programs.
