Monroe College Ranked Among Nation's Top 100 Colleges by Washington Monthly Magazine
Bronx, NY (PRWEB) April 23, 2014 -- Monroe College, a national leader in urban and international education, today announced that it has been ranked among the top 100 Master’s Universities in the nation by Washington Monthly Magazine. Monroe placed 62 out of 684 colleges in the publication’s 2013 Master’s Universities Rankings List. Monroe was ranked eleventh out of the 59 colleges in New York State that made the list, and it was the only proprietary school to be featured in the top 100.
Master’s Universities are one of the Carnegie Classifications of higher education institutions, generally defined as schools that award at least 50 master’s degrees and fewer than 20 doctoral degrees during the year.
Washington Monthly, a publication founded in 1969 with a focus on American politics and policy issues, rates schools based on their “contribution to the public good” in three broad categories, including: social mobility – comprising the percentage of Pell grant recipients, net tuition, and the predicted graduation rate and actual graduation rate; research – comprising financial expenditures and the number of students who go on to pursue a PhD; and service – comprising a peace corps and ROTC rank, federal work-study funds spent on service, community service participation, and service staff, courses and financial aid support.
Monroe ranked 23 in the social mobility category with an actual graduation rate of 69 percent – nearly forty percentage points higher than the predicted rate of 32 percent. For more information on the ranking methodology of Washington Monthly’s Master’s Universities Rankings, please see here.
“This ranking underscores our students’ dedication to their education, and our faculty’s unwavering commitment to their personal and academic success,” said Stephen Jerome, president of Monroe College. “We serve a diverse student body and take a highly individualized approach toward ensuring that each of them is equipped with the requisite tools to achieve their goals both inside and outside of the classroom.”
Monroe College was recently ranked the number one regional university for exceeding predicted graduation rates by U.S. News & World Report. The publication also ranked the college’s online bachelor’s degree program among the best in the nation, and third in New York State. In September 2013, Monroe was recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the most affordable ranked private college in the state.
