Boardman, Ohio (PRWEB) April 29, 2014 -- The purpose of assembling a team is to group together individuals that have the right mix of skills to accomplish a specific project. According to Dr. Sanford Kulkin, founder of PeopleKeys, teams can fail when they include people with the right skills but the wrong personalities.
“It’s tempting to think that a good team is composed of strong-willed, driven, people that think alike,” Kulkin said. “In reality, this is rarely the case. For example, if a team is composed of only dominant personalities, there’s bound to be conflict. A team made up of only extroverted and social personalities would really enjoy their meetings, but might have a hard time getting things done. Teams need to be balanced by including a mix of personality types that complement one another. This allows teams to take advantage of the unique skills that all of the different personality styles bring to the table.”
One popular method of ensuring that teams include a balanced mix of personalities is DISC. According to the DISC model, first developed by clinical researchers in the 1920s, the human personality can be divided into four broad categories or types—Dominant (D), Influencing (I), Steady (S), and Conscientious (C). Within each category are specific traits and behaviors. Dominant personalities are direct, decisive, inclined to take risks. Influencing personalities are outgoing, enthusiastic, optimistic, and persuasive. Steady personalities are supportive, empathetic, and generous. Conscientiousness personalities are organized, precise, cautious, and analytical.
An individual’s DISC personality type is determined by taking a short personality test. From there, teambuilding becomes a straightforward process of selecting at least one person from each personality type for the team.
Companies have found that DISC personality tests provide an easy and effective way to ensure that people with complementary skills are paired with one another. DISC providers like PeopleKeys are frequently brought in to provide testing tools, administer and interpret personality assessments, and to host seminars and webinars designed to educate businesses on the ways that different personality types interact.
Companies currently using DISC to help with team building and other corporate strategies include Keller Williams Real Estate, Manpower, United Airlines, Santek Environmental, and IBM.
In response to the growing popularity of personality testing in team building, PeopleKeys will be offering a Team Building webinar on May 16 at 1pm EST. For more information about the PeopleKeys Team Building webinar, visit peoplekeys.com.
