Chronic Pain Gaining Recognition as Serious Condition
Toronto, ON (PRWEB) April 25, 2014 -- Chronic pain is a serious condition with long-lasting effects. Chronic pain requires ongoing treatment and medical management. According to Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, chronic pain affects 1 in 5 Ontarians.
The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care recently announced the creation of a new program, the Extensions of Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) Ontario demonstration project to ensure people who suffer from chronic pain receive the care and treatment they need.
The Ontario government will be providing funding to the University Health Network to administer the ECHO project. The ECHO project will be a 3 year project to connect primary care providers in Central, Central East and North West Ontario with pain, addiction and mental health experts. The projection is a “demonstration” project based out of the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. Other involved partners include Queen’s University, University of Toronto Centre for the Study of Pain, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, the Wasser Pain Management Centre and the Ontario Telemedicine Network.
The program will include expansion and development of the provincial referral guidelines for MRIs, CT scans and other types of diagnostic imaging. Creating proper guidelines for diagnostic imaging will reduce equipment overload and wait times.
The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is also promoting the proper use of narcotics and harm reduction strategies and introduced the Narcotics Monitoring System.
Being able to receive the proper treatment is important to patients with chronic pain. Most long-term disability policies require that a person be under continuous care of a doctor and participating in reasonable treatment. Improved access to medical care will help chronic pain patients. Chronic pain patients should document all doctor’s appointments, and all types of treatment they are receiving/attending.
If your long-term disability claim has been denied for any reason, consult an experienced lawyer as soon as possible, to be advised of your rights.
