President Obama and Prime Minister Abe Applaud Japan-America Student Conference (JASC) in the Joint Statement
Washington, DC (PRWEB) April 26, 2014 -- In the Joint Statement following their summit meeting, President Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Abe applauded the Japan-America Student Conference as an “indispensable” bilateral exchange program between the two nations. Their remarks about JASC highlight the mission of ISC in promoting peace by furthering mutual understanding, friendship, and trust between the U.S and other nations through student-run conferences.
“[Many] non-governmental programs linking the people of our two countries…are indispensable, as are the dozens of academic associations, university linkages, and privately-funded exchanges, for example the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship; the United States-Japan Bridging Foundation Scholarships; the Grew Bancroft Scholarship; and the Japan-America Student Conference, which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year,” said the Leaders Statement on U.S.-Japan Bilateral Exchanges in the Joint Statement issued on April 25, 2014, by the White House and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
Glen S. Fukushima, Vice Chairman of the ISC Board of Directors, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, and JASC alumnus (1970 & 1971), expressed enthusiasm, saying, “As the first and oldest student-run exchange program between the U.S. and Japan since 1934, JASC has cultivated numerous leaders in various fields, including former Japanese Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa and former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. We are thrilled that President Obama and Prime Minister Abe have recognized ISC’s work for JASC as we continue to develop the next generation of young leaders on both sides of the Pacific.”
