Vivid Learning Systems Launches Stewards of Safety™ Awareness Campaign
Pasco, WA (PRWEB) April 28, 2014 -- In response to the disappointingly high number of occupational fatalities and serious injuries, Vivid Learning Systems has launched the Stewards of Safety™ initiative to raise awareness of the overlooked epidemic, and help save lives in high-risk work environments.
According to the Council for Occupational Safety & Health, over 4,000 workers die on the job each year—that’s uncomfortably close to the casualty total for all years of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Annually, 50,000 more are buried because of occupational diseases. On average, that’s about 150 workers dying every day. The goal of the Stewards of Safety™ is to help lower those grim statistics by elevating safety consciousness and encouraging leadership.
“This is an awareness and preparedness problem. Without sufficient safety consciousness, the American workplace remains a deadly environment,” said Liz Bormida, Vivid spokesperson.
Vivid introduces the movement to shine light on the defining crisis for workers of this generation—the struggle to reduce the rate of serious injuries and fatalities on the job. Said Bormida, “The rates of occupational death and injury have remained stable for far too long. We are not making enough progress on reducing the number of these tragic events.”
To honor the memory of the deceased, Vivid has timed the launch to coincide with national Workers Memorial Day on April 28th. It was on that date in 1971 that the Occupational Safety and Health Act first went into effect. Workers Memorial Day is a time of remembrance for the men and women who have traded life for livelihood.
The Stewards of Safety™ campaign was developed in collaboration with sympathetic experts and industry veterans familiar with the spectrum of high-risk work. Participants are asked to pledge support, share the message socially and commit to spreading safety awareness. It takes about three minutes to sign up. By taking the pledge, each new Steward of Safety™ receives a free kit including downloadable safety awareness assets.
Said Bormida, “Without the involvement of the community and commitment from stakeholders, we cannot lower the number of serious worker injuries and fatalities. If you’re an American worker that wants to protect the future of our workforce, take the pledge and become a Steward of Safety™.”
