Announcement: BluesGuitar.com Releases “Secret Blues Scale - Lead Guitar Lesson”
(PRWEB) April 29, 2014 -- “Today we are looking at what I call the secret blues scale”, says MacLennan, “a lot of guys when they are playing over an A7 chord or a blues shuffle, the immediate inclination is to just to go for that straight minor pentatonic sound”. Jon continues by demonstrating what that approach sounds like. Jon says “that’s a great sound, but it has a very harsh sound to it with that flat 7th”. Jon explains what he calls the secret blues scale by replacing the 7th tone of the minor pentatonic scale with the 6th tone and in the key of Am that is changing the G to an F# (F sharp). The minor pentatonic scale pattern that Jon uses is as follows; 5th fret of the 6th string with first finger to 8th fret with 4th finger, 5th fret of the 5th string with first finger to 7th fret with 3rd finger, 5th fret of the 4th string with first finger to 7th fret with 3rd finger, 5th fret of the 3rd string with first finger to 7th fret with 3rd finger, 5th fret of the 2nd string with first finger to 8th fret with 4th finger and 5th fret of the first string with first finger to 8th fret with 4th finger. Jon continues by demonstrating some different phrases using this concept stating that “you get a really sweet sound, like a Stevie Ray Vaughn thing”. Jon says that “you show a little bit more sophistication when you combine the two sequences together so you don’t sound so typical”.
